Food choices can have significant environmental impacts. Previous research has begun to develop datasets that identify the encroachment of specific crops on the ranges of birds, mammals and amphibians. Based on these data, Cheng and colleagues estimated how 151 different popular dishes from around the world impact biodiversity. #biodiversity #food https://lnkd.in/e-dGa6Ep

My new opinion piece in BusinessGreen explores the role of business and policy leaders in sustainable diets. (Excuse the mugshot! 😉) The drive to meet climate goals is a major opportunity to transform the national diet to benefit climate, nature and people. We need to transform our food system from farm to fork. We must move to a new food paradigm: away from a focus on producing as much food as possible and towards ensuring everyone can access and afford the nutritious food they need to live healthy lives. Transitioning to sustainable diets is a key solution that will enable us to improve supply chain resilience, meet net zero and restore nature. #food #sustainablediets #foodpolicy #healthydiets #foodbusiness #business #foodenvironments #climatechange #sustainability #resilience #foodsystem
Businesses and governments must create 'net zero' food environments

♦️🔴The Piraputanga fish, scientifically known as Brycon hilarii, is a fascinating species renowned for its unique behavior of leaping out of the water to feed on fruits. ♦️🔴Native to South America, particularly the Pantanal region, this freshwater fish has adapted its feeding habits to include the consumption of fruits hanging over the water. ♦️🔴Equipped with strong muscles and a streamlined body, the Piraputanga executes impressive jumps, propelling itself out of the water to snatch fruits from branches above. ♦️🔴 This behavior is not only a testament to the fish's agility but also highlights its ability to exploit alternative food sources, contributing to its ecological versatility. ♦️🔴 The Piraputanga's diet primarily consists of aquatic insects, small crustaceans, and fish. However, during the fruit-bearing season, it seizes the opportunity to diversify its diet. ♦️🔴This behavior is not commonly observed among other fish species, making the Piraputanga a notable example of adaptation to changing environmental conditions. ♦️🔴Researchers believe that this unique feeding strategy provides the Piraputanga with a nutritional advantage and aids in the dispersal of seeds, contributing to the health of the ecosystem. ♦️🔴 The fish's ability to jump for fruit is not only a survival tactic but also plays a role in the ecological balance of its habitat.♥️♥️

ECOLOGICAL SUCCESSION & SOIL BUILDING Ecological succession is a process of change in ecosystems that affect the structure of the species over time. 1. Each community creates conditions that subsequently allow next communities to adapt to a habitat. 2. Gradually, the decomposition of biomass contributes to soil formation. 3. When mature soil is formed and enough amount of nutrients become available the climax community (stable ecosystem e.g. a forest), is attained. 4. A climax community will persist in a given location until novel disturbances occur. Microbiome consortia are an important part of this process. - In agricultural soils that are regularly tilled, the weight of fungi is less than that of bacteria (that better tolerate disturbances). - In grassland areas, there is around an equal distribution of bacteria and fungi - The weight of fungi present in forest soils is much greater than the weight of bacteria. Agricultural intensification has led to practices that may decrease soil organic carbon (SOC) and changes the natural cycling of nutrients in the soil. The adaptation of regenerative farming practices can thus help to avoid soil disturbance and leave room for natural soil formation processes. Following stages of secondary succession, soil cores demonstrating the development of a litter and humus layer on sandy soil in regenerating boreal forest after clearance for agriculture. #organicfoods #organic #healthyfood #food #healthylifestyle #vegan #healthy #organicfarming #organicgardening #veganfood #crispr #bio #plantbased #regenerative #healthyeating #glutenfree #health #natural #gmos #healthyliving #nature #homemade #growyourownfood #vegetarian #nutrition #gardening #organicproducts #vegetables #organiclife

Do you know what role you play as a consumer in the transition to #Agroecology? Better yet, are you aware that we have the power to shape the food systems and make them sustainable? You can do this by demanding transparency, quality and sustainability. Imagine visiting a vibrant farmer’s market where the sights, sounds and aromas of fresh produce awaken your senses. Alternatively, you can start small by growing a few herbs or vegetables on your balcony or joining a local community garden. Support farmers’ markets or join a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. It is possible to transform the way we produce and consume food while forging a path towards a sustainable and harmonious future. The journey starts with a single step that each of us can take today by embracing #agroecology. @Afsafrica #Youth4Agroecology

🌊🐟 Dive into the Future of Food: Aqua culture! 🐠🌱 Did you know that the global demand for seafood is skyrocketing? 🚀🌍 As we strive to feed a growing population sustainably, aqua culture is emerging as a game-changer in the world of food production. 🌱🐟 Aqua culture, also known as fish farming, is the practice of cultivating aquatic organisms like fish, shellfish, and plants in controlled environments. 🐠🌿 Not only does it provide a consistent and reliable source of high-quality protein, but it also has the potential to alleviate pressure on our oceans and protect wild fish populations. 🌊🐟 Here are a few reasons why aqua culture is making waves in the food industry: 1️⃣ Sustainable Solution: By raising fish in controlled environments, aqua culture minimizes the environmental impact compared to traditional fishing methods. It reduces overfishing, habitat destruction, and pollution while conserving water resources. 🌱💧 2️⃣ Nutritional Powerhouse: Seafood is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals essential for our health. Aqua culture ensures that we have access to safe and nutritious seafood options, all year round. 🥬🍽️ 3️⃣ Economic Opportunities: Aqua culture creates jobs and boosts local economies, especially in coastal regions. It provides employment opportunities for farmers, technicians, and researchers while supporting related industries like feed production and equipment manufacturing. 💼💵 4️⃣ Technological Advancements: With advancements in technology and innovative practices, aqua culture is becoming more efficient and sustainable than ever before. From recirculating systems to automated feeding and monitoring, technology is revolutionizing the way we cultivate aquatic organisms. 📈🔬 As we navigate the challenges of feeding a growing population while preserving our planet's resources, aqua culture offers a promising solution. Let's support this industry's growth and work together towards a more sustainable and secure future for our global food system. 🌍🌱 Are you involved in or interested in aqua culture? I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences in the comments below! Let's make a splash together! 💦💪 #AquaCulture #SustainableFood #FutureofFarming #Seafood #Innovation #FoodSecurity #LinkedInInfluencer

Please have a listen to the latest podcast episode from GRACE project FoodPrint, all about biodiversity and featuring guests Ricardo Salvador, Preeti Simran Sethi, Urvashi Rangan, Ryan Nebeker and Rowen White. We can see the causes and effects of biodiversity loss all around us. Only one variety of banana or pineapple for sale in every grocery store. Or the miles and miles or corn and soy you pass as you drive the roads of Iowa, Minnesota and Illinois. Or the windshield effect: that there are far fewer dead insects on our windshields as we drive those country roads. We are right now in what’s being called “a biodiversity crisis,” in terms of the number of species we are losing and the increasing pace at which that loss is happening. The primary driver of species loss is our global agriculture system — in other words, the way we grow our food. And as we lose those varieties and breeds of animals and plants, we don’t just lose their genetics, we lose their unique tastes and flavors, too. #biodiversity #biodiversityloss

(- : noFoe : -) Reflections on Wed, 06mar24 🌄😀🌅 Good Morning 🙏🏽😀🙏🏽 The grinding of the intellect is for most people as painful as a dentist's drill. ~ Leonard Woolf Land is becoming a diminishing resource for agriculture, in spite of a growing understanding that the future of food security will depend upon the sustainable management of land resources as well as the conservation of prime farmland for agriculture. ~ MS Swaminathan RELEVANT OBSERVANCE BY THE WORLD TODAY (theme / information / purpose "tip"): 1. Dentist's Day (Honor our favourite nerve-wracking experience in the dentist's chair). 2. World Lymphedema Day (Lymphedema is an abnormal protein-rich fluid collection that causes swelling beneath the skin. The fluid, filtered through the lymph nodes, causes swelling, usually in the arms or legs, but can happen in other areas too). 3. White Chocolate Cheesecake Day (This delicious dessert has been around for centuries, with evidence of cheesecake enjoyed by ancient Greeks and Romans. However, it wasn't until the 19th century that white chocolate was first created, adding a new twist to this classic dessert). 4. World Conservation Strategy Day (Argues that for development to be sustainable, it should support conservation rather than hinder it. This Conservation is through the protection of ecological processes and life-support systems, preservation of genetic diversity and sustainable utilisation of species and ecosystems). 5. World Laksa Day (Laksa is a spicy noodle dish from Southeast Asia, popular in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand). 6. Frozen Food Day (Recognises the preservation feat of freezing fruits, vegetables, and meats in modern life. Clarence Frank Birdseye II is credited for developing the quick-freezing method in 1924. He observed that food must be frozen quickly to keep its original taste and texture). 7. Oreo Cookie Day (Oreo comprises two chocolate disks containing a cream filling. The National Biscuit Company, known as Nabisco today, created the Oreo in 1912, which was trademarked the same year. Since then, it has been the best-selling cookie in the World). Make it a Wonderful Day 👍🏽😀👍🏽 ------- Are you a (- : noFoe : -) ? n = nation / national / native o = opting F = Friendship o = over e = enmity -------

Beef to Chickpeas - It is well known that meat dishes and fast food can have a high impact on biodiversity and sustainability. But recent scientific studies indicate that some vegetarian recipes popular in South Asia can also carry a surprisingly large biodiversity footprint. Consumers have limited information on the biodiversity implications of choosing to eat a particular dish made with ingredients that add to pressure on the environment. #biodiversity #india #climatechange #agriculture #foodculture https://lnkd.in/eKvuMg-V
